Controversial tech company quietly deletes ban on 'military' use from terms of service
OpenAI, the parent company of the popular artificial intelligence chatbot platform ChatGPT, altered its usage policy to get rid of a prohibition on using their technology for "military and warfare." OpenAI's usage policy specifically banned the use of its technology for "weapons development, military and warfare" before January 10 of this year, but that policy has since been updated to only disallow use that would "bring harm to others," according to a report from Computer World. "Our policy does not allow our tools to be used to harm people, develop weapons, for communications surveillance, or to injure others or destroy property," an OpenAI spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "There are, however, national security use cases that align with our mission. For example, we are already working with DARPA to spur the creation of new cybersecurity tools to secure open source software that critical infrastructure and industry depend on. It was not clear whether these beneficial use cases would have been allowed under'military' in our previous policies. So the goal with our policy update is to provide clarity and the ability to have these discussions."

Aliens 'have been on Earth a long time': Stanford Professor
An unknown object with flashing lights appeared to hover over Marine base in Twentynine Palms, California, in 2021. A Stanford University pathology professor said, "Aliens have been on Earth for a long time and are still here," and claims there are experts working on reverse engineering unknown crashed crafts. Dr. Garry Nolan made the bold statements during last week's SALT iConnections conference in Manhattan during a session called, "The Pentagon, Extraterrestrial Intelligence and Crashed UFOs." The host, Alex Klokus, said that's tough to believe and asked him to assign a probability to that statement that extraterrestrial life visited Earth. "I think it's an advanced form of intelligence that using some kind of intermediaries," Nolan said.

Gamers get a chance to battle an AI on the QT. Plus: Robo-marines, and fisticuffs over facial recognition in Detroit
Roundup Hello, here's a few announcements from the world of machine learning beyond what we've already covered this week. AlphaStar is coming out to play: AlphaStar, the StarCraft II-playing bot built by DeepMind researchers, will be facing human players in a series of 1v1 games online. StarCraft II players can enter the open competition league set up by Blizzard Entertainment, the creators of the popular battle strategy game, and opt-in to play against AlphaStar. But nobody will know if they're facing the bot, however, because it'll be entering the matches anonymously. Characters in the StarCraft II are from three species: Terran, Zerg or Protoss.
